Green Bay Packers: 5 offseason needs in 2019

It turned out to be a disastrous 2018 for the team from Titletown. Now with a new head coach, can the Green Bay Packers be a playoff contender once again?

With prolific quarterback Aaron Rodgers missing more than half of the 2017 season, the Green Bay Packers missed the playoffs after eight consecutive postseason appearances. This past year, the entire team struggled from top to bottom. Head coach Mike McCarthy was fired after 12 games and the Pack was back under .500 for the second consecutive season.

Now it’s first-time NFL sideline leader Matt LaFleur to the rescue as the team looks to rebound from consecutive losing campaigns, something not seen by this franchise since the 1990 and ’91 seasons. And this usually-effective club has a lot of issues to address over the coming months.

5. Address the safety positions

Around last fall’s NFL trade deadline, the Green Bay Packers’ standout safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Washington Redskins for a fourth-round pick in 2019. He has been one of Green Bay’s better defensive players in recent years and was named to the Pro Bowl in ‘16.  In his absence down the stretch, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and the team utilized veteran cornerback Tramon Williams in that role.

Of course, both safety spots saw their share of starters this past season. Second-year pro Josh Jones missed the first three games of 2018 due to injury but rebounded to finish fifth on the team with 51 tackles. He’ll be back for his third year in the league and Williams and Kentrell Brice are still under contract as well. But it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Packers turn to free agency to address these areas.
