Giants show they are ready for star power with Bryce Harper
By Cody Rivera
The Giants have discussed a 10-year contract with Bryce Harper, proving that they are all-in on one of the biggest MLB free agents in years.
As recently as a few weeks ago, it didn’t seem like the San Francisco Giants were very high on Bryce Harper’s radar. But of course, that was when it was believed that they had no interest in signing the 26-year-old free agent to a long term contract.
As it turns out, the Giants are showing interest in it after all. It’s no secret that Harper is chasing a behemoth contract — one that would total 10 years and land north of the $300 million mark.
Though it’s almost March and Harper still hasn’t chosen a team, it’s likely that he will end up getting the deal that he wants. It’s just a matter of when and where.
San Francisco seems like an unlikely landing spot for Harper, but it would be a slam dunk for the Giants if they could pull it off.
And the fact that they are willing to discuss a 10-year contract — and an awful lot of money — for Harper shows that they are ready to get some top tier star power back on their roster.
The Giants certainly haven’t been short on success in this decade, having won three World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014 with Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey leading the way.
They were one of the league’s hottest teams at the time, but have since cooled off in recent seasons, going just 73-89 last year and finishing fourth in the NL West.
Bringing Harper to the Bay Area, however, would give the Giants the kind of star power they haven’t seen since the Barry Bonds days.
With Posey and Bumgarner still in their primes, as well as other pieces like Evan Longoria and Jeff Samardzija, adding Harper would be exactly the piece they need to get back into contention.
Obviously, $300 million is a lot of money, but Harper is a generational talent. He’s a former National League MVP, a former NL home run champ and a six-time All-Star.
For the Giants — or for any other team in the Harper sweepstakes — every cent would be worth it if it means they can get a World Series title out of it.
