2019 Heisman Trophy odds: Tua, not Trevor Lawrence, opens as favorite
By Nick Villano
The 2019 Heisman Trophy odds are out and Tua Tagovailoa is the betting favorite with Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence close behind.
Trevor Lawrence threw for 3,280 yards and 30 touchdowns as a freshman and led Clemson to the National Championship with a win over Alabama, but he’s not the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in 2019.
SuperBook USA unveiled their opening odds for the Heisman and Lawrence checks in second behind Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Lawrence is receiving 3/1 odds while Tagovailoa, the runner-up to Kyler Murray last year, is the betting favorite with 5/2 odds.
- Tagovailoa – 5/2
- Lawrence – 3/2
- Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma – 6/1
- Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State – 6/1
- Adrian Martinez, QB, Nebraska – 6/1
- Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin – 15/1
- Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama – 30/1
- Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon – 30/1
- Alan Bowman, QB, Texas Tech – 40/1
- JT Daniels, QB, USC – 40/1
- Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia – 40/1
- Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson – 40/1
- A.J. Dillon, RB, Boston College – 40/1
- Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas – 40/1
The two betting favorites are going to command a lot of the offseason headlines and should jockey back and forth throughout the regular season. Beyond the two quarterbacks from last year’s title game, there are other Heisman hopefuls who hope to crash the party.
Former Alabama quarterback turned Oklahoma transfer, Jalen Hurts looks to become the third straight Sooners signal-caller to win the trophy, following Murray and Baker Mayfield who thrived in Lincoln Riley’s system.
Then, there’s the other high-profile transfer quarterback, Ohio State’s Justin Fields who left Georgia after his freshman year and takes over for the departed Dwayne Haskins who finished third in the Heisman vote last year.
And then there’s the big surprise on this list, Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez who is receiving the same 6/1 odds as Hurts and Fields after throwing for 17 touchdowns and running for eight more as a true freshman in Scott Frost’s offense.
The non-quarterback with the best odds is Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor who has run for 4,171 yards in his first two years with the Badgers. Another 2,000-yard campaign that sees Wisconsin return to the top of the Big Ten West standings could be enough for Taylor to take the Heisman away from the talented quarterbacks.
Expect a fun Heisman chase all season and for the odds to fluctuate between now and the opening weekend.
