Even though both Florida State and Virginia Tech should make the NCAA Tournament, a double bye in the ACC Tournament could be on the line tonight.
While a lot of teams across the country are sweating their fates on the NCAA Tournament bubble, Virginia Tech and Florida State can rest reasonably easy. Both teams have done more than enough to qualify for March Madness, so their focus is on building the best possible resume to make their path through the bracket as favorable as possible.
The Hokies have had a week off to get ready for this game, but the last time we saw Virginia Tech they were toppling Duke without Zion Williamson. Virginia Tech walked away from that game with a 77-72 victory as Kerry Blackshear Jr, who led the team with 23 points, was one of four Hokies in double figures.
The Seminoles also enter this game on a two-game winning streak, including Saturday’s 78-73 victory over N.C. State. Sophomore forward Mfiondu Kabengele came off the bench to lead the Seminoles with 16 points in the win, one of four Florida State players with at least 10 points on the afternoon.
Both teams check into the game with identical 11-5 ACC records, putting them in a tie for fourth. The ACC tournament awards double byes to its top four seeds, so the loser of this game could be forced to play an extra game in Charlotte next week. That is a fate both Florida State and Virginia Tech would love to avoid.
