Kansas needs a win to keep their dreams of a Big 12 title alive while Oklahoma needs a win, period, in order to rise above the bubble madness in the final week of the regular season.
Don’t look now, but Kansas’ streak of 14 consecutive Big 12 regular season titles may be about to come to an end. Kansas enters the final week of the regular season a game behind both Texas Tech and Kansas State, meaning they need some help to extend the streak.
The Jayhawks have issues of their own, however, as they barely escaped lowly Oklahoma State with a win on Saturday. Dedric Lawson came up huge for Kansas, leading the team with 20 points and contributing a season-high 15 rebounds to help the Jayhawks escape Stillwater with the W.
Kansas will continue their tour of the Sooner state tonight with a trip to Norman to take on Oklahoma. The Sooners took care of business more efficiently on Saturday, topping West Virginia 92-80 to bounce back nicely from a 17 point loss at Iowa State earlier in the week.
Freshman guard Jamal Bienemy, who had scored just eight points over his previous four games, exploded for a career-high 22 in the win, tying senior Aaron Calixte’s team-leading offensive production. The Sooners are just 6-10 in the always competitive Big 12, so a split of the Kansas schools (they travel to Manhattan on Saturday for a showdown with K-State to end the regular season) is pretty much a necessity.
