The Kansas City Chiefs were one of the more exciting teams in football this past season, thanks to a first-year starting quarterback who set the NFL on fire. Patrick Mahomes took over for Alex Smith, who led the team to back-to-back AFC West titles, and became the league’s Most Valuable Player, throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns.

It was an incredible performance for a guy who had to overcome the loss of his star running back during the season, and an incredibly bad defense. In fact, had the Chiefs been even remotely better on the defensive side of the ball, they likely would have been the last team standing with the confetti falling on them in Atlanta.

As they head into the offseason,  they have a lot of questions when it comes to the veterans on their defense. They plan to put the franchise tag on Dee Ford, but  the expectation is that they will release Justin Houston, who has played such a big role on this defense for so many years, as has Eric Berry, who could be on his way out as well.

If the team does decide to part ways with Berry, who has been an inspiration at the safety position, bringing in the best safety in the draft class makes sense. Deionte Thompson from Alabama did not have the best national title game, but he is an extremely talented defender, and the Chiefs need to get better on that side of the ball moving forward.
