Does Captain Marvel take place before or after Infinity War?
By Leah Smith
Captain Marvel will be coming out almost a year after Infinity War, but the events of Captain Marvel will be taking place over 20 years before Thanos’ snap.
One of the certainties about Captain Marvel is that the events of the movie take place before Infinity War. Unlike Ant Man & The Wasp that took place around the same time as the Avengers’ first fight with Thanos, Captain Marvel is making sure it has even more space between itself and the great snap. Over 20 years of space.
This will be the 21st entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but when it comes to the chronology of the MCU, it holds a much different position: second. The movie is set in 1995, well before even the events of Iron Man. Only Captain America: The First Avenger takes place prior to Captain Marvel.
In addition to avoiding having to explain how Carol Danvers avoided being part of the half of the universe that was dusted, the 1995 setting allows for Captain Marvel to stay clear of an increasingly confusing timeline.
There will be no worries of an “eight years later” error in this movie. It is clear in where it stands in the chronology, after Steve Rogers’ time in World War II, but long before Tony Stark appeared his first Iron Man film. But, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be any familiar faces popping up.
MCU fans will get to see ’90s versions of both Nick Fury (with two eyes) and Phil Coulson. Plus a lot of ’90s nostalgia seen right from the first trailer when Carol crashes into a Blockbuster. And earlier reaction to the movie praises the throwback soundtrack.
Despite taking place well before Infinity War and Endgame, Captain Marvel is sure to tie directly into those films. And we already know that from the post-credits scene of Infinity War. At some point, Nick Fury is sure to give Carol that special pager (a sentence that is strange to type in 2019).
Thus tying Captain Marvel directly into the next Avengers movie.
