Washington Redskins Fantasy Outlook Under QB: Case Keenum

Thursday afternoon, the Washington Redskins acquired QB Case Keenum from the Denver Broncos. As reported by Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) on Twitter, the trade also entails the Redskins sending their 2020 sixth round pick for the Broncos 2020 seventh rounder. The exchange in picks does not have much relevance as the Broncos are merely just dumping off some of Keenum’s salary they would not have recouped if they had just released him.

It is hard to imagine that the Redskins would bring in Keenum just for him to sit behind Colt McCoy. There have been talks that Keenum and McCoy will be “battling” for the starting job, but it should be short-lived. McCoy had one full game as a starter last season that resulted in a road loss to the Dallas Cowboys where he threw three interceptions. Though Keenum is not the long-term answer, expect him to be the Week 1 starter.

So what type of fantasy impact does this have on the Washington Redskins? Not too much.

They do not have a clear number one receiver as TE Jordan Reed is the only reliable target heading into the offseason. Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, and Maurice Harris are the only notable wideouts under contract. Expect the Redskins to make a splash in the offseason providing Keenum with some viable weapons

The focal point of the Redskins’ offense in 2018 was 33-year-old running back, Adrian Peterson. With Peterson expected walk, second-year runner, Derrius Guice is expected to be the lead back coming off of an ACL injury. Outside of Guice, the Redskins lack the presence of a playmaker.

We should fully expect the Redskins to be a run-first offense in 2019, regardless of who they add. Derrius Guice should run the show being the physical runner that he is. Same as when they had Peterson, Guice will have much more success when the Redskins are playing with a lead.

He was not relied on as a pass-catching back in college, but did haul in the occasional checkdown with 18 of his 32 career receptions coming in his final season at LSU. Keenum has been known to dump it off as he Jerick McKinnon saw 68 targets in 2017. This past season, he targeted the rookie duo of Philip Lindsay and Royce Freeman a combined 67 times this past season.

Though he should not be on your radar as Fantasy Football option in 2019, Keenum should be good enough to spread the ball around in the Redskins offense. The veteran has now started 31 games in his past three seasons and has shown the ability to make plays. It will be interesting who the Redskins surround Keenum with in 2019, as this offense does not look too appealing heading into the offseason.
