After a pair of strange losses on Wednesday night, Big East rivals Georgetown and Marquette will look to end the regular season on a winning note.
College basketball is extremely unpredictable, and Wednesday night in the Big East was a classic case of that. The Marquette Golden Eagles and Georgetown Hoyas were both expected to pick up wins, but each walked away with a bizarre loss.
Both teams were on the road, but Marquette actually led desperate Seton Hall most of the way. The Pirates took over down the stretch, going on an 18-0 run to end the game and walk away with a much-needed 74-63 win.
Marquette got nothing out of Naismith semifinalist Markus Howard, who entered the contest averaging nearly 26 points per game but put up only six on 2-11 shooting in Newark. While the Golden Eagles can’t be thrilled with the possibility they let a Big East regular season title slip away, they at least can rest easy knowing they will be in the NCAA Tournament.
Georgetown doesn’t have that luxury, and what happened to them on Wednesday was downright shocking. The Hoyas went to DePaul, a team they had beaten by nine points just a week earlier, and got run out of the gym.
The Blue Demons blew out Georgetown 101-69, with guard Max Strus putting up 30 points for DePaul, including eight treys. For a Georgetown team with a very thing resume to get into the tournament, this loss was extremely damaging.

Marquette defeated Georgetown 74-71 earlier in the season, and if they can complete the series sweep it could put the Hoyas in deep bubble trouble. The Hoyas could fall all the way to seventh place in the Big East, meaning they would have to play in the first round of the conference tournament and win at least two games to put themselves in good shape to be considered for an at-large.
