Free agent safety Earl Thomas has reportedly been asking for a fat contract as he listens to offers.

The Seattle Seahawks watched safety Earl Thomas carted off the field last year with a broken leg. It was at that time the Legion of Boom era officially ended in Seattle. Thomas was already unhappy about his contract and set to hit free agency. Now that he is free of his contract to Seattle and the NFL’s legal tampering period has begun, Thomas is making it clear what he wants.

According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, Thomas is asking teams for a two-year deal with $30 million. Slater says that rumors are Thomas is looking for “at least $14 million annually.”

Thomas signed his last deal four years ago that paid him $10 million per year. He earned a total of $40 million from that contract. He was looking for a new deal before last season, which was the big reason he held out.

Thomas missed all of last year’s preseason action during that hold out. It almost trickled into the regular season before he came back. There was a point where it looked like he was going to join Le’Veon Bell in sitting the entire season out unless he got a new deal. Now like Bell he is a free agent.

The requested two year, $30 million deal would make Thomas the highest paid safety annually. That spot is currently held by Kansas City Chiefs’ Eric Berry at $13 million per year. Slater mentioned in her linked tweet that Thomas is looking to beat that number with his new contract.

There are a ton of available players at the safety position in free agency. That could lead to teams getting players at a discount. We’ve already seen the Rams scoop up Eric Weddle for under $7 million annually. Tyrann Mathieu, a player who was on a one-year deal last year because of the same stale safety market, reportedly turned down a multi-year offer at $9.5 million annually to test the market. Former Giants safety Landon Collins already landed a massive six-year, $86 million deal with the Washington Redskins.

Look for the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys to make a play for Thomas’ services. There are connections off the field for him in both places and both teams have dire needs on the back end.
