Titans sign Adam Humphries: Grade, reaction and more

It’s likely a make or break year for Marcus Mariota with the Titans. The addition of Adam Humphries will give him a very valuable safety blanket.

Corey Davis came into his own for the Titans last year, but there’s no question Marcus Mariota needs more weapons if he’s going to succeed in Tennessee. Signing Adam Humphries doesn’t give him the most dynamic receiver in the NFL, but it does give him a reliable slot receiver that should catch a lot of balls in 2019.

    • It’s the second slot receiver the Buccaneers have lost today. Combine Humphries’ departure with the DeSean Jackson trade and it’s easy to see a real changing of the guard in Tampa Bay. Neither departure was unexpected, but both moves signal a clear youth movement for the Buccaneers. The Titans are happy to take advantage of all the turmoil by inking Humphries to a nice deal.

    Contract Details

    Adam Caplan of NFL.com is reporting that Humphries will sign a four-year contract with the Titans that will pay him $36 million. That $9 million average annual value will tie him with Jets’ wideout Quincy Enunwa to become the 23rd highest-paid player at his position to date.

    National Reaction

    The key to Humphries value to the Titans will come on third down. He’s not a game breaker, but it’s widely acknowledged to be one of the most effective receivers in the NFL at moving the sticks.

    For all the Fantasy Football players out there, Humphries should definitely be on your radar. Think of him as a lesser version of Vikings star Adam Thielen in the slot.

    Humphries decision to leave Tampa Bay isn’t sitting well with Buccaneers fans. They’ve said goodbye to several important players during the first day of free agency. It’s clear the Bucs’ area headed for a big time rebuild.

    B. . WR. Tennessee Titans. ADAM HUMPHRIES

    The size of this deal might shock some casual NFL fans, but it’s actually one of the most reasonable deals of the day. Paying Humphries to be one of the top slot receivers in the NFL is perfectly reasonable. We’re talking about a guy who caught 76 balls for 816 yards last season for the Buccaneers despite a lot of uncertainty at quarterback.

    Humphries should be an excellent fit for the Titans if they can get solid production from their No. 1 and No. 2 wide receiver spots. Humphries isn’t a guy who’s going to look good if he’s forced to play on the outside. If Davis and/or Taywan Taylor falter, the Titans must resist the urge to move Humphries into one of their positions

    In the end, this is exactly the sort of move Tennessee needed to make if they want to really evaluate Mariota this season. If he can’t succeed throwing to a reliable receiver like Humphries, the Titans may conclude he isn’t the right guy to lead their offense moving forward.
