2019 NFL mock draft: Full 7-round version
By Joe Romano
4. Oakland Raiders
D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss
The Oakland Raiders are a mess in more ways than one. Luckily for them they own three first round picks on top of other draft capital that could allow them to turn it around in a hurry. Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock are going to give them a new perspective on the draft that may be enlightening to fans. The only question is when it comes down to it who is making decisions. If it is Mayock then they are in good hands. If it is Gruden, the team could be in trouble and I’m leaning that Gruden has final say.
With Nick Bosa and Josh Allen off the board, the Raiders are in a bit of a pickle. The next best players unamiously are Quinnen Williams and Ed Oliver, both defensive tackles. Oakland just spent a second and sixth round pick on the position and both players played well in their rookie year. Taking either with the holes all around the roster would be malpractice. The team could also choose to grab a quarterback like Dwayne Haskins here. That would mean finding a home for Derek Carr’s massive contract, no easy feat.
Instead of all those options, the Raiders are a team that could get enamored by Ole Miss wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. After losing a former first round receiver in Amari Cooper who the team thought underperformed, they are able to grab the draft’s best receiver in Metcalf.
After putting on a show in Indianapolis, despite poor agility testing, Metcalf has plenty of fans in the NFL. Gruden, given his history, is likely to be one of them. There are very few people Metcalf’s size that can move like he does. Even with those poor agility numbers, Metcalf showed that he can beat press and run the routes that are asked. Those that complain about his bad testing in agility drills did not see him on film. If an offense cannot find a way to utilize the physical specimen that he is, the coaches should be fired.
Oakland could also be looking to move on from Carr next offseason. Drafting Metcalf allows whoever comes in next to have an elite weapon at his disposal. This is the first big shocker of the draft but fits what could happen come April. Metcalf’s stock has never been higher and does not look to be dropping down any time soon.
