Manchester City face Schalke at the City of Manchester Stadium on Tuesday, March 12. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

These are strange times for both clubs. Manchester City are top of the Premier League and look almost certain to progress in this tie, but there is plenty of uncertainty over Pep Guardiola’s long-term future at the club. Investigations by various soccer governing bodies into City’s actions in the fields of finance and recruitment have also set nerves on edge.

Their on-field performances haven’t been great lately, either, with dubious penalties and offside goals being needed to break the deadlock against West Ham and Watford in recent Premier League games.

Meanwhile, after enjoying every lucky break imaginable last season, Schalke remain mired in a relegation battle this term, a fall from grace that looks likely to cost both coach Domenico Tedesco and director of football Christian Heidel their jobs.

Heidel, who enjoyed remarkable successes on a shoestring budget at Mainz first with Juergen Klopp and then Thomas Tuchel, has already stated that he will resign when a successor has been found. Instead of Heidel bringing much-needed calm to a club that has often been a byword for behind-the-scenes turbulence in recent times, it seems that Schalke has chewed him up, much as it did his immediate predecessors.

There has also been plenty of speculation that Tedesco will be sacked after this game and Saturday’s tricky Bundesliga encounter with Leipzig have been played. If that does come to pass, then he can have few complaints. Schalke are among the wealthiest teams in Europe but have played a dour, cynical, safety-first brand of soccer since Tedesco took the helm.

Schalke were very fortunate to score twice three weeks ago, and it’s almost impossible to see them getting lucky again here.
