The Players Championship 2019: Complete list of previous winners
By Luke Norris
Ahead of the 2019 edition of The Players Championship, here’s a complete list of previous winners.
Since its inception in 1974, back when it was called the Tournament Players Championship before becoming simply The Players Championship in 1988, this tournament has become one of the biggest in the world, annually attracting the top players in the game to compete for what has become golf’s biggest purse.
Naturally, with the world’s top players usually in attendance, The Players Championship has a great list of past champions, including Jack Nicklaus, who won three of the first five editions of this tournament. To this day, he’s still the only man to win The Players three times.
There are five golfers who have won The Players on two occasions, all of whom also own major championship victories. Hal Sutton first won this tournament back in 1983 and then waited 17 years to stare down Tiger Woods and take The Players again in 2000. Tiger would come back to win in 2001 (this was the year of the “better than most” putt on the 17th) and took the title again in 2013. Steve Elkington emerged victorious in 1991 and 1997, Fred Couples notched wins in 1984 and 1996 and Davis Love III took the honors in 1992 and 2003.
The list of past champions also includes names such as Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Sandy Lyle, Nick Price, David Duval, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Jason Day and Rickie Fowler. Hall of Famer Greg Norman was also a victor at The Players Championship, taking the title in 1996, shooting a record 24-under-par in the process, a record that stands to this day.
