Giants may prefer Kyler Murray over Dwayne Haskins
The Odell Beckham trade gives the Giants a lot more ammunition heading into the draft. They may use their extra picks to move up and grab Kyler Murray.
It’s an open secret that the New York Giants need to find their quarterback of the future this offseason. That’s why many NFL mock drafts have them pegged to take Dwayne Haskins with the No. 6 overall pick. General Manager Dave Gettleman’s recent decision to trade Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns many up a different path for the franchise.
Now the Giants have extra draft picks they can use to move up and down the board in Round 1. Specifically, it opens up the possibility that New York can move up to pick the top quarterback on their draft board. It’s quite possible that player is Kyler Murray.
The Giants are sending a healthy amount of personnel to observe the former Oklahoma signal caller’s pro day, but they also plan to meet with Murray individually after his on-field work. That sends a clear signal that Gettleman and his front office haven’t ruled out the possibility of making a big move for Murray.
If the Giants do want to come away with Murray, they may have to move all the way up to No. 1 to make sure they get their guy. The Cardinals currently own that pick and have been strongly linked with Murray as well. Arizona drafted Josh Rosen in the first round of last year’s draft, but the arrival of Kliff Kingsbury as their head coach may portend a quick changing of the guard at the quarterback position.
Interestingly, Kingsbury, Cardinals GM Steve Keim and team owner Steve Bidwell have all elected to pass on Murray’s pro day entirely. Other front office personnel will watch the workout, but it’s rare for a team not to send their top brass to watch a player they’re considering drafting No. 1 overall. On the other hand, this could just be a smoke screen designed by the Cardinals to mask their current intentions.

At the very least, it’s safe to assume that the Giants will sound the Cardinals out about what it might take to move up to the No. 1. There’s nothing more important for Gettleman and company than making sure they come out of this draft with the right quarterback to build around for the future. If they really believe Murray is significantly better than Haskins, they won’t hesitate to pay the price to make sure they can select him.
