New York Jets: 5 reasons why Le’Veon Bell is an awesome signing
3. Bell helps the Jets wide receivers
A strong, steady rushing attack can help open up the passing game, and while “establish the run” has become a meme, an extreme in the other direction can be just as damaging to an offense. In Le’Veon Bell, the Jets have a running back who can carry the rock 20 times per game and open things up for the wide receivers down the field, as defenses will have to respect the fact that Bell can bleed them dry over the course of a game.
The Jets main wide receiver duo of Anderson and Enunwa can dominate on the outside and burn defenses deep, with Anderson standing to gain the most from Bell’s solid work in between the tackles. Bell can steadily average 4.5-5.0 yards per carry, and by keeping safeties honest, he can help give Anderson more room to work with. After flashing last season with a 50/752/6 line to lead the team, Anderson is a 2019 breakout candidate with Bell in the backfield.
Furthermore, Bell’s work as a pass-catcher underneath can help open things up for Anderson and Enunwa on the outside, as linebackers must account for Bell wreaking havoc over the middle of the field. With the ball in his hands, Bell is dangerous in space, and the Steelers would even use Bell split out wide to create more mis-match problems.
Darnold stands to benefit from this, of course, making Bell’s overall impact on the Jets offense that much more profound.
