After failing to claim the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament, the Purdue Boilermakers will look to start their quest for a championship with a win over Minnesota tonight.

Michigan and Michigan State have received all the headlines as the Big Ten’s best teams, but it is worth mentioning that Purdue earned a share of the league’s regular season title. The Boilermakers went 16-4 in the Big Ten during conference play but lost a tiebreaker to the Spartans for the top seed after losing to Michigan State earlier in the year.

That loss makes life a lot more difficult for Purdue, which ended up on the other side of the bracket and could be staring at a semifinal matchup with Michigan tomorrow. First up, however, will be a quarterfinal showdown tonight against a solid Minnesota squad.

The Golden Gophers have been riding the bubble all season long, but they have finally started to trend in the right direction now that the calendar has flipped to March. Minnesota has won three out of its last four games, including yesterday’s 77-72 triumph over a gritty Penn State squad, to move much closer towards securing an at-large bid on Selection Sunday.

The Golden Gophers could pretty much punch their ticket outright by topping Purdue today, and they should have confidence in their ability to do so. The two teams split their meetings during the regular season, but Minnesota emerged with a victory over the Boilermakers in their most recent matchup, winning 73-69 in Minnesota just 10 days ago. Even if the Golden Gophers can’t win today, a respectable showing should be enough to make them feel reasonably confident heading into Selection Sunday.
