The Virginia Cavaliers will look to move one step closer to securing the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament with a win over Florida State in the ACC Tournament semifinals.

With Gonzaga’s loss in the WCC Tournament earlier in the week, the path is wide open for Virginia to claim the top seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers have yet to lose to any team not named Duke this season, and Virginia has been on fire of late.

Tony Bennett’s squad received a scare in their ACC Tournament opener yesterday, trailing N.C. State at the half, but the Cavaliers outscored the Wolfpack 49-27 in the second half to survive and advance. Kyle Guy led the way for Virginia, scoring 29 points while going 10-13 from the floor, including an impressive 7-9 from beyond the arc.

The opposition for Virginia will be the ACC’s no. 4 seed, Florida State, which needed overtime to escape a rugged Virginia Tech squad yesterday. Terance Mann played the role of hero for the Seminoles, hitting an off-balance runner with 1.8 seconds to go in overtime to help Florida State earn their date with Virginia.

Even though the Seminoles are safely in the NCAA Tournament, a win over the Cavaliers could have massive seeding ramifications for Florida State. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi currently projects a no. 4 seed for Florida State, so a win over the nation’s top team could move the Seminoles up a line in the bracket.
