Hertha are having another decent season under Hungarian coach Pal Dardai, who spent 14 years with the club as a player. There are concerns, however, about whether the Berlin side have reached their ceiling, at least for the immediate future.
While the Olympiastadion holds close to 75,000, the club don’t own the stadium and as a result have one of the league’s smaller operating budgets, despite their home ground’s mammoth size. The example of their stand-out performer in recent months, Liverpool loanee Marko Grujic, seems to sum up their predicament. Although the lure of living in the German capital and playing in one of Europe’s top leagues is enough to attract promising young talent in the short-term, Hertha presently just don’t have the funds to keep such players for very long.
Dortmund have concerns of a very different nature. Since the turn of the year, they’ve gone out of the German Cup to Werder Bremen (albeit on penalties) and the Champions League to Spurs (albeit by an unjustly wide margin over the two legs), and then lost their place at the summit of the Bundesliga to Bayern (albeit only on goal difference at the moment).
