There was a real sense of expectation surrounding Real Betis coming into this season. A sixth-place finish last term, which saw them end up above city rivals Sevilla, was followed in the summer by high-profile signings such as William Carvalho and Giovani Lo Celso.
But it’s turned out to be a maddeningly inconsistent campaign so far, with victories over Sunday’s opponents — at the Camp Nou, no less — and Atletico Madrid being interspersed with losses to Huesca and Valladolid. Betis are currently eighth in the table, just behind Valencia, another side that’s had a very topsy-turvy season.
Barcelona go into this game seven points clear of Atleti at the top of La Liga and 12 above third-placed Real Madrid. They also have a Copa del Rey final against Valencia at the end of May to look forward to, but it’s reaching the Champions League final on 1 June that’s Barca’s biggest priority this term. A quarterfinal draw against Manchester United certainly hasn’t done their hopes any harm.
