3. SEC

Teams: 7, Kentucky (2), Tennessee (2), LSU (3), Auburn (5), Mississippi State (5), Ole Miss (8), Florida (10)

Average seed: 5

The SEC was arguably the second best team in the country this season behind the ACC, in terms of talented teams from top to bottom, and that showed on Selection Sunday.

Heading into the final two days of conference tournament games, both Tennessee and Kentucky were believed to be fighting for a one seed, but after the Vols knocked off Kentucky and Auburn pulled off the big upset in the SEC Championship game, it ended with Kentucky and Tennessee as two seeds, and Auburn getting a five seed.

The regular season conference champion LSU Tigers, who fell in the second round to Florida, were still able to land a three seed while Mississippi State, to the surprise of many, climbed up to land a five seed even after losing three of their final five games.

Ole Miss and Florida both were bubble teams who landed decent seeds, with the Rebels under Kermit Davis drawing an eight and the Gators a 10.

The 2019 NCAA Champions could very well come from the SEC for the first time since 2012 when Kentucky defeated Kansas. Both Kentucky and Tennessee will likely be popular picks by the nation and the media to end up in Minneapolis. But on the same hand, don’t be surprised if after the Tournament is over, if the SEC is a conference we’re talking about as one that underachieved.
