Houston Cougars – Elizabeth Warren
Elizabeth Warren (Class of ’70) is currently a Democratic Senator in Massachusetts. The Senator has already announced her candidacy for the 2020 Presidential Election. While in office, Warren has fought for consumer protection, economic opportunity and the social safety net. Regardless of your political views, Warren is one of the more influential women in the United States.
Iona Gaels – Robert Greifeld
NASDAQ may not mean much to some people, but for those individuals who like to invest their money or who work in the financial field, NASDAQ comes with huge importance. Robert Greifeld (Class of ’79), the CEO of NASDAQ, has held his post since 2003. For those who do not know much about NASDAQ, it is the second largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization, the only stock exchange bigger is the New York Stock Exchange.
Iowa Hawkeyes – Ashton Kutcher
Ashton Kutcher (attended 1996-1998) only attended the University of Iowa for two years, but his accomplishments after he left lands him on the list. Kutcher got his start acting and modeling. He was one of the stars of That ’70s Show. He has also acted in Dude, Where’s My Car?, The Butterfly Effect, and was the lead role of Steve Jobs in the movie Jobs. The actor is also a venture capitalist who invests in many startup technology companies in his spare time.
Iowa State Cyclones – George Washington Carver
In the Midwest, agriculture is important as many of the Midwestern states are ripe with farmers providing food for the rest of the country to eat. George Washington Carver (Class of ’94) was an agricultural scientist who stressed the importance of planting peanuts as an alternative crop, especially for the poor farmers. He published 44 bulletins with over 100 recipes for the peanut, including peanut butter. He was also responsible for introducing the idea of crop rotation to promote healthy soil and replenish the nutrients of the soil.
