NFL Draft 2019: Miami Dolphins full 2019 NFL mock draft
By Joe Romano
Round 1 – Pick 13
Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida State
Early in the draft process it seemed like commonsense to slot a quarterback in here for the Dolphins. While the signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick should not take them out of the market to still pick a quarterback, all signs point to that not being the case in Round 1. That leaves Miami in a very unique spot. They have a tons of holes to fill on their roster, and can use this pick to address them.
The most glaring need on this team is on the edge. Long-time presence Cameron Wake is now with the Tennessee Titans. Former first-round pick Charles Harris is a bust and not what the team expected when they drafted him two years ago. The only remaining pass rusher on the team is veteran Robert Quinn and his time in Miami seems to be coming to an end. That is not a lot of production or potential for one of the game’s most important positions.
Miami should be counting their blessings that this is a deep edge rushing group and they can find a very talented player at the No. 13 pick. In this mock draft, that player is Florida State’s Brian Burns.
A local from Fort Lauderdale, Burns is a quarterback hunter. He brings an element off the edge that Miami does not have, with his ability to get off the ball quickly and bend the corner. Despite looking light, Burns weighed in at 250 pounds at the Scouting Combine and still dominated the athletic testing. He is an elite athlete with excellent pass-rush moves. He would immediately be the best pass rusher on this team and sets up Flores’ defense to do a better job of getting to the quarterback.
This is a spot where the Dolphins could trade back. Quarterback Drew Lock could still be on the board and a team may want to jump up and grab him. Miami, in their rebuild, would be smart to acquire picks. This pick, since there are no trades, came down to Burns versus tackle Jonah Williams and defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Oliver would make a ton of sense given the lack of interior presence on the team. Williams could replace the departed Ja’Wuan James at right tackle. In the end, Burns’s positional value won out, thus giving the Dolphins a stellar defensive lineman to compliment a young, exciting secondary.
