Round 3 – Pick 98

Anthony Nelson, EDGE, Iowa

A sneaky position that could be a need for the Jaguars is on the edge. Yannick Ngakoue and Calais Campbell have those positions locked down. What they do need to find is someone that can play outside when Campbell bumps inside. The fact that he does this often shows the hole that is there at defensive end.

Anthony Nelson of Iowa seems like an ideal fit for that role. He can join last year’s first-round pick Taven Bryan as versatile defensive lineman. Bryan is an ideal fit as a three technique who can line up outside if necessary. Nelson is the opposite. He can win on the edge but has the size to bump inside. He’d have an ideal mentor in Campbell.

Nelson seems like a Coughlin pick, just like Risner. He’s got a relentless motor, plenty of experience and has been described as an excellent person in the locker room. His ability to win with fantastic pass-rush moves and get to the edge will get him on the field in a hurry. Bryan was much more of a projection. Nelson is not, we know that he can win on the outside and is a pro’s pro. This may be a little early, given his limited athleticism, but Jacksonville is the perfect landing spot for him.

A long-term front of Ngakoue, Bryan, and Nelson is a great core. With Campbell and Marcell Dareus still contributing, it sets them up with depth and the ability to win in a variety of ways up front.
