2019 NFL Draft: 5 players Giants could take in Round 1

The Giants have suffered through one of the worst offseasons in the NFL. Dave Gettleman and company need to ace the 2019 NFL Draft.

Dave Gettleman isn’t a General Manager who puts much stock in what others think. That’s good news for the head of the Giants front office. If he were inclined to listen to public opinion he would be mired in deep depression.

To say that Giants fans haven’t been a fan of their team’s offseason to date would be a serious understatement. Trading Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland after insisting he hadn’t been given a new deal to be dealt caused real issues for New York fans. The decision to let Landon Collins leave in free agency didn’t help matters either.

That leaves the Giants with numerous holes to fill in the draft. That makes forecasting what they will do with the No. 6 pick so intriguing. Here are five players that could be selected to help rebuild Gettleman’s roster.

5. Ed Oliver

Never underestimate just how much importance Gettleman places on building up his talent in the trenches. He might not fall in love with Oliver’s off-the-field issues, but he could be mesmerized by the defensive lineman’s ability to wreak havoc on the line of scrimmage.

In particular, Oliver would provide the Giants with a significant upgrade over A.J. McIntosh at the left defensive end position. The signing of Markus Golden might accomplish that for New York, but remember, he’s only inked to a one-year contract.

If the Giants really want to select Oliver the right move would be to trade down a few spots and make the pick. That would allow the franchise to accrue some more draft capital. They certainly have enough needs to put some extra picks to good use. Oliver is a guy who will really interest Gettleman, but drafting him at No. 6 would be a reach.
