Virginia survives upset bid, but can’t even cover spread vs. Gardner-Webb

Virginia, who struggled in the first half against Garner-Webb in their first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament, didn’t even cover the spread.

Virginia survived but they couldn’t even cover the 22.5-point spread vs. No. 16 Gardner-Webb as Tony Bennett’s team remains tough to trust in the NCAA Tournament.

In the first half of their first-round matchup against Garner-Webb, it certainly looked like they would be branded “March Frauds.”

Thankfully, for the sanity of Cavaliers fans, Virginia would recover and bet Garner-Webb 71-56, but that score, as much of a blowout as it looks, is actually quite embarrassing in its own right.

You see, Virginia went into their first-round matchup 22.5 point favorites, and, they didn’t cover the spread, which, I’m sure, upset a lot of people who backed them. But then again, that’s their fault for trusting this team in the first place.

That should teach us two important lessons: 1) Never bet on Virginia with the spread, and, 2) Never bet on Virginia, period.

It seems like the Cavaliers will always find a way, some way, to let people down, Whether it’s torturing their fan base by playing down (yet again) to their first-round opponent, or bringing agony to Vegas bettors who thought that the Cavaliers would do damage to Garner-Webb.

Well, if you’re not looking at the score through the eyes of a gambler, they did, but, by not covering a 22.5-point spread against Garner-Webb, that says something. That says that this is a team that may not have the tools to get to the Sweet 16, let alone to the Final Four.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Virginia has the will power to push through to the Final Four? But, one thing we know, for sure, is that Virginia is iffy, at best, when it comes to the spread, and for the folks who are courageous enough to bet on them, heed these words:

Tread lightly.
