Us was expected to be a box office blaster, and now, official Rotten Tomatoes as officially anointed the horror classic as “fresh.”
Was there truly any doubt that Jordan Peele’s Us would be certified “fresh” by Rotten Tomatoes?
Sure, there were some skeptics out there, but, all-and-all, with early reviews showing that the horror film was worth the price of admission, we were all really waiting on Rotten Tomatoes to give it the rating we knew it would get.
Counting over 323 reviews, Us has a whopping 94 percent on the movie review site, which should tell you that this movie is going to be an instant classic. Scrolling through the reviews, you’d be hard-pressed to find a bad review on Us. We did find one, however, from Matthew Lickona of San Diego Reader, who wrote:
“The result is bloody but weirdly bloodless, a sort of thinky exercise in horror filmmaking. There’s more juice in the laughs here than the scares.”
Even the bad review had praise for Us, and in a lot of ways, the film relies more on the mental aspect of scares than your jumpscare-fest, which defines so many modern day “horror” films. In a similar manner, Us is the spiritual cousin of Get Out, which relied on terrifying your mind, which made the product that much more terrifying.
For the audience score, Us got 69 percent favorable reviews, which qualifies it for “liked it.” Now, granted, there were trolls out there who tried their best to bring down Us’ score, but you can’t bring down perfection, no matter how hard the trolls tired.
As much as some critics had a problem with the “thinking” aspect of Us, many appreciated the film giving them mental anxiety, which, again, made the story Us was trying to tell that much scarier.
