Round 2 – Pick 41

Erik McCoy, C, Texas A&M

Losing stalwart center Matt Paradis leaves a hole at the position for Denver. Paradis was lost to a season ending injury mid-way through last year. His replacement, Connor McGovern was in over his head as a starter. Finding someone to man the pivot should be a priority in Denver.

Erik McCoy of Texas A&M is the second rated center in this draft behind North Carolina State’s Garrett Bradbury. Both players have a chance to go in the first round with Bradbury being as close to a lock as possible. McCoy is less likely to hit that round one projection but fits in nicely atop the second round for Denver.

McCoy is an exceptional athlete at center and a longtime starter. The fact that his best games came against the nation’s two best defensive lines in Clemson and Alabama is encouraging. In space and when pulling there are few that can bring McCoy’s base and exceptional leverage. He has a tendency to let defenders get inside on him because of a lack of length. However he’s got a great anchor and ability to steer defenders even if they have position on him. One of the draft’s youngest prospects, McCoy gives Denver a long time answer in the middle to go with their bookend tackles.

This is another spot where Denver could address the linebacker position. Alabama’s Mack Wilson and Minnesota’s Blake Cashman were the top options available. Both would be a reach at this point in the draft. Fangio could opt to help his corners out as well with this selection but that is a deeper position than interior offensive line. McCoy’s immediate impact and long-term future was too bright to pass up here.
