Round 3 – Pick 71

Drue Tranquill, LB, Notre Dame

This is a sweet spot for Denver to address linebacker. Without grabbing one of the top two players at the position, the Broncos would be wise to wait a bit. Devin Bush and Devin White are elite prospects and defensive changing players. There are no other linebackers like that in the class and that is why both players were top ten picks in this mock draft.. All of them have a ton of questions.

One player with the least amount of questions is Notre Dame’s Drue Tranquill. His advanced age (will be a 24-year-old rookie) and injury history are the deterrents from him getting selected higher. On the field though Tranquill is a good player.  His combine testing showed that he is a better athlete than originally expected. His mental processing of the game is top notch. Tranquill is athletic enough, and smart enough, to be a plus in zone coverage and any type of pass plays.

This would give Denver a trio of Tranquill, Todd Davis and Josey Jewell as potential starters. Tranquill is like Jewell in a lot of ways but a much better athlete both on tape and in testing. With the team likely using base nickle over 65 percent of the time, it means only two linebackers on the field. Neither Davis or Jewell should be the main guy in that role. Tranquill would make sense as the nickle linebacker despite his change of direction skills not being elite.  This pick solidifies up the team’s biggest hole defensively.
