2019 NFL Draft: Washington Redskins full mock draft
By Joe Romano
Round 2 – Pick 46
Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama
If you looked at a mock draft during the college football season you inevitably saw Alabama safety Deionte Thompson in the first round. His impressive play to close the 2017 season, including in the National Championship game, had draft fans raving. Thompson started the 2018 season just as strong. He profiled as an elite option at the back end of the defense. He displayed excellent ball skills but was not reluctant to come up and make a play on a running back or receiver in space. This was a do-it-all safety that had first rounder written all over him.
As the 2018 season progressed, the shine began to come off of Thompson. He looked like he lost his instincts in the back end. The splash plays and interceptions slowly went away. He was still impactful for the Tide’s defense in his role but questions popped up. He is always a player that can make plays but allows plays as well, it’s just the style he plays. To be fair, this second round range is probably appropriate for Thompson given his up and down play.
Washington would be getting an excellent addition to their secondary. He would join fellow former Crimson Tide safety Landon Collins to compliment each other well. Collins excels around the line of scrimmage and in the box. Thompson could cover him on the back end and play sideline to sideline as a free safety. Should Thompson maximize his skills and become consistent with what he does well, this could be a steal for the Redskins.
