Round 3 – Pick 79

Oshane Ximines, EDGE, Old Dominion

The loss of Preston Smith opened up a hole at the edge position for Washington. Ryan Kerrigan is criminally underrated on the other side but would be best when having a partner in crime. Kerrigan’s game is based on being a well-rounded, extremely quick and strong pass rusher. He can win in a variety of ways and needs to be accounted for whenever he is on the field. Giving him someone on the other side will open up the entire defense.

Like Thompson, Old Dominion’s Oshane Ximines was a prospect receiving a first round grade earlier in the process. Coming off a strong final season, Ximines was trying to follow in the footsteps of Marcus Davenport a year ago as a small school prospect taken in the first round. Ximines is not nearly as productive or athletic as Davenport and has since fallen back to the pack.

Ximines is an exciting and intriguing prospect in his own right. A little undersized with shorter than expected arms, the combine measurements were not kind to him. His game is built on athleticism and his combine performance in that area was more than adequate. He won’t blow you away with one single trait but has enough of everything to be a solid pass rusher at the next level.

Ximines is best served being a late down rusher early in his career. Once he adds weight and some technique he can become an every down player as a stand up outside linebacker in an odd front. For Washington that would allow former second round pick Ryan Anderson to get the majority of reps and Ximines spelling him as the better pass rusher.
