President Uli Hoeness stated earlier in March that his club were in the midst of “the biggest investment program FC Bayern has ever had.” That was demonstrated on Wednesday when the German champions shattered their transfer record by signing defender Lucas Hernandez for €80 million from Atletico Madrid, after having already paid Stuttgart €35 million in January to secure the summer arrival of Benjamin Pavard. Both players won the World Cup with France in July.
With the curtain set to fall on Arjen Robben’s and Franck Ribery’s long and decorated stints in Munich, there will almost certainly also be new recruits who play further up the pitch. Bayer Leverkusen wunderkind Kai Havertz and Lille forward Nicolas Pepe have both been linked heavily, although Bayern’s pursuit of Chelsea teen Callum Hudson-Odoi looks set to end in failure.
It’s a sign of Bayern’s recent dominance that despite this having apparently been a pretty disastrous season, they could still feasibly end up winning a domestic double. The Munich giants are currently ahead of Dortmund on goal difference in the Bundesliga and will play a German cup quarterfinal against second-tier FC Heidenheim in midweek.
Freiburg, meanwhile, have a minuscule budget, and any Bundesliga season in which they avoid relegation can be viewed as a success. Nonetheless, their likable coach Christian Streich yet again has the Black Forest club punching well above their weight, as they presently sit 11th in the league.
