Virginia is just one win away from making its first trip to the Final Four since 1984, but they will have to get by red-hot Carsen Edwards and Purdue to earn the South Region’s ticket to Minneapolis.

No matter who wins the South Region’s spot in the Final Four tonight, a long drought will be broken. Virginia, the top seed in the region, hasn’t reached the Final Four since 1984 while their opponent, 3-seed Purdue, hasn’t gone there since 1980.

The Cavaliers survived a dogfight with one of the hottest teams in the field, topping 12-seed Oregon 53-49 to advance into the Elite Eight. This game was a typical affair of Virginia teams in recent tournaments, with neither team shooting particularly well, but the Cavaliers made just enough plays to move on.

The other matchup in the South Region was a much wilder affair, with Purdue nearly blowing a huge halftime lead against Tennessee, who came all the way back to hold an 82-80 lead in the final seconds. A controversial foul call sent Carsen Edwards to the line for three free throws, and he knocked down two to send the game to overtime, where the Boilermakers escaped with a 99-94 victory.

The key player in this game will be Edwards, who has taken his game to another level since the start of the NCAA Tournament. Edwards led the Boilermakers with 29 points in the win over Tennessee and has averaged 32.3 points per game in March Madness.

Virginia’s defense presents a whole new set of challenges for Purdue, which needs secondary scorers to step up and help Edwards out, but if he goes off Edwards could shoot the Boilermakers past the Cavaliers and into the Final Four.
