The Midwest Regional final is an all-SEC affair after Auburn’s upset of top-seeded North Carolina earned them a date with bitter rival Kentucky with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
While most of America obsessed over the ACC and Big Ten this season, the SEC has had a very strong year. The conference sent four teams into the Sweet 16, trailing only the ACC, and two of them are playing today for a spot in the Final Four.
The team most expected to be here was the Kentucky Wildcats, who scraped by a very dangerous Houston team to get back to the Elite Eight for the seventh time in the last ten years. P.J. Washington returned from a foot injury for Kentucky and was a big factor, putting up 16 points and coming up with a huge block late in the game.
The bigger surprise comes from the fact that the red-hot Auburn Tigers are still dancing. After burying Kansas from deep in the Round of 32, the Tigers pulled off one of the shockers of the Tournament on Friday, knocking down 17 three-pointers to eliminate top-seeded North Carolina.
Six different players recorded at least 10 points for Auburn, which put up a whopping 97 points on the Tar Heels to knock out a popular pick to win the whole thing. These schools met twice during the regular season, with Kentucky winning both matchups, but Auburn is a much different team now than they were back in January and February.
