5 overreactions for the Yankees slow start that may turn out to be true
2. Brett Gardner may be done
Gardner put on a terrific display during Spring Training that quieted any real concerns about his ability to positively impact the Yankees this season. Unfortunately, he’s begun the regular season by going one for 13 at the plate.
The good news from a Yankees perspective is that Hicks does seem to be close to a return from injury. That’s going to give Boone the chance to rest Gardner a lot as the season goes along.
The downside to that is it might be difficult for Gardner to get into a groove at the plate. That means he needs to find his stroke in the upcoming series against the Tigers. If he is still hitting sub .200 when Hicks returns it’s going to be really difficult for him to improve his offensive numbers to an acceptable level.
The Yankees don’t have an internal option capable of taking his spot on the roster, but it’s possible they could look to find an upgrade at the trade deadline. Gardner’s place on this team isn’t quite as secure as many fans think.
