5 WWE Superstars who should have main-evented WrestleMania
By Matt Black
Many WWE Superstars have headlined WrestleMania over the last thirty-five years, but here are five that should have but never did.
WrestleMania 35 is upon us. This Sunday the Showcase of Immortals will take place once again in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Last time WWE brought WrestleMania there was only six years ago, headlined by John Cena and The Rock for the WWE Championship.
The argument could be made that this match shouldn’t have main-evented WrestleMania 29 since it was the main event of WrestleMania 28 just a year earlier. This is but one example of the WWE Universe questioning the main event placement of talents over the course of the last 35 years.
The main event slot at WrestleMania is one of the biggest accolades pro wrestlers can boast on their resumes. But unfortunately, not everyone who deserved the main event at WrestleMania actually got to do it. Here we will run down five WWE Superstars who should have main-evented WrestleMania. Let’s start with a big one, shall we?
1. Ric Flair
This one’s a no brainer: The 16-time world heavyweight champion, ”The Nature Boy” Ric Flair. To this day there are people out there that still don’t understand why Hulk Hogan versus Flair didn’t main event WrestleMania VIII over Hogan and Sid Justice.
It’s been a missed opportunity by WWE over the years to not put this match on a pay per view broadcast, let alone WrestleMania. The story WWE gives is that the match didn’t draw on the house show loop, but that seems very hard to believe.
WCW eventually gave us this match years later in the main event of their pay per view, Bash at the Beach. The event itself was certainly considered a success for the company, but it also makes one wonder how big this matchup could have been on the WrestleMania stage.
For being one of the most decorated wrestlers in the history of this sport, it’s a shame that Flair never got his chance to main event a WrestleMania. It easily would have been a classic like only the Nature Boy could deliver.
