Being the Elite recap for April 2, 2019: Find the Librarian
By Matt Black
A weekly recap of the hit YouTube series Being the Elite, starring the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, Cody and others.
Being the Elite opens up this week with MJF sneaking around an empty home, presumably the new home of Cody and Brandi Rhodes that they are currently moving into. MJF is found in the kitchen by Cody and he immediately tries to explain himself. Cody didn’t want to hear any of it; instead, he sits MJF down and quotes a scene from the movie Rocky Balboa almost word for word
It was honestly pretty confusing, and MJF obviously agreed by mouthing some words at the end of it that we can’t repeat here. It was an extremely odd way to start this week’s show, but entertaining nonetheless. The scene left us with more questions than answers regarding the dynamic between Cody and MJF.
After the 8-Bit opening, we go to Matt Jackson in his hotel room, and there is a knock on the door to the tune of the Razor Ramon entrance theme. Matt answers the door and its Kenny Omega. Matt asks him what’s up and Omega says he feels like he needs to apologize, that they all have a pretty full plate and doing CEO this year would be irresponsible. Matt cuts him off, however, and lets him know that he thinks CEO is an amazing idea and that he’s completely on board now. He proposes the match that he pitched to JeBailey last week, him against Michael Nakazawa in a hardcore deathmatch.
Omega is worried a match like that would be a bit dangerous for an untrained professional but Matt convinces him that it will be fine. Matt reminds him that they have another event, Fight for the Fallen, a few weeks after CEO and he wants to differentiate between the two shows and hopes Omega can do the marketing campaign for it. Omega agrees but then Matt tells him he basically wants him to do everything on his own which leaves Omega a bit flabbergasted as he leaves the hotel room.
They cut to Brandi meeting up with AEW’s latest signing, Allie. She tells Allie how happy she is that she’s here and that it’s a personal journey for her because it allows her to be big enough to look past the things that happened before. Allie is clearly confused, so Brandi reminds her about all the times she got beat up in Impact and that she asked Allie for help but she never did.
Allie quickly apologizes and says she was a different person back then. As she’s explaining, Brandi laughs and says she’s just kidding and busting her chops and that she’s glad she’s there. Allie looks relieved as Brandi walks away and stares at her behind her back with an evil scowl on her face. The evil authority figure has really been overdone in pro wrestling as of late and one could only hope AEW steers clear of that kind of stuff for at least the initial launch of their company to set them apart from everyone else.
We go back to Omega trying to watch a video of some gameplay on his laptop but he has to sit through a very confusing ad in the process. Eventually he pauses it and says that he’s been thinking too small and comes up with an idea that combines wrestling and video games and feels he has his marketing strategy for CEO and wants to call Matt.
Before he does, however, we cut to SCU in San Francisco, California. Unfortunately, we don’t get to hear the actual words that they were saying as we heard them through Matt’s earbuds, and he thought they were saying nothing but the dreaded “Michael Nakazawa.”
The show goes back to Brandi, at the White Sox stadium in Chicago to show off the first Sensory Room in a Major League Baseball stadium. AEW is partnered up with KultureCity, who help create these rooms and on April 2, for one day only, you can buy a specially made shirt for World Autism Awareness Day at the Pro Wrestling Tees website, with 100 percent of the sales donated to KultureCity.
They go to a clip from C2E2, which probably should have been on last week’s episode, where Omega, Matt and Nick Jackson talk about how tired they all are. They suddenly hear the voice of the Villain Marty Scurll mentioning how exhausted he was as well, but when the camera pans there’s no one there. They all asked each other if they heard it and they did, and Omega said it sounded like Scurll was right there. This should be a tease of things to come; the sooner The Villain is All Elite the better.
We cut to Joey Ryan at another random independent show and he’s greeted by MJF. Ryan is hoping Cody and the Bucks are there to save him from getting beaten up but MJF lets him know that they are not there but he’s got his back, as long as Ryan pays him. He gives MJF all the money he has which MJF doesn’t feel like is enough, but will give him the “brother rate”. As Ryan walks away, however, MJF uses that money to pay off a few random wrestlers to beat up Ryan. As they beat him up, MJF sits there in a chair not lifting a finger to help as Ryan calls out to him to save him.
Finally, we go to the Bucks and Omega in a hotel room watching more video submissions for the Librarian. After they watch them all, the three of them try to determine which one is their favorite, Omega and Matt both have one and Nick seems disenchanted with the whole idea, stating that the gimmick isn’t going to draw.
At this point AEW Owner Tony Khan calls Matt’s cell phone, and the three of them end up taking the phone away from each other and talking to Khan about the situation as it’s clear the three aren’t on the same page, to the point where Nick told Khan that Punk (obviously referring to CM Punk) would never do this gimmick and that it sucks.
Omega is the last one Khan speaks to and after he gets off the phone he informs the Bucks that Khan told him that this Librarian thing is very important to him. It’s the one thing that he’s asked for, and if they don’t find the perfect one that makes the company money, that the three of them are fired. This leads to Omega imploring the viewers of Being the Elite to send in new videos from people with in-ring experience and promo skills and that they need it, badly.
They end up cutting to the floor as Omega asks Nick if he’s sure Punk wouldn’t do it, to which Nick replies that he definitely wouldn’t. This wraps up another edition of Being the Elite. Last week, being the C2E2 edition we mentioned that it was interesting that neither Punk nor Scurll had a part on the show because they were all in the same place that weekend.
This week, however, both men are mentioned. Do you think Scurll or Punk find their way to AEW? Do you want them there? Who do you want to see as the Librarian? Sound off in the comments section below.
