Fantasy Baseball 2019 Week 1 Injury Report
By Bill Pivetz
We’re about a week into the 2019 fantasy baseball season but there have already been a lot of injuries.
Injuries, however significant, are a part of fantasy baseball. There are players that are labeled “injury prone” because of how often they land on the
DL
IL. While you can never predict injuries, how you manage them will separate you from your opponents. Though, your team would benefit when your healthy players return.
With just a week of games in the books, there are a good amount of players on the IL. Some will out for months while others should be back by the end of next week. Regardless, owners want to know if their players will be back or suffered a setback, delaying their return.
Knowing the status of a player will also help you get a jump on your league-mates. You will be the first to add their replacement and rack up the at-bats or innings. They may not be long for your team but they will contribute in some capacity.

The players on this list will be IL-eligible. There will be no day-to-day players here. As the name implies, they may only miss a day or two, which shouldn’t affect your fantasy team all that much. If it does, then you have bigger problems.
Here’s the first injury report of the season.
Giancarlo Stanton
The Yankees slugger was placed on the 10-day IL with a left biceps strain. It is unknown how he suffered the injury but the Yankees took quick action. “Stanton will be shut down from all baseball activities for 10 days due to his strained left biceps,” Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports.
That means he’ll be out longer than the minimum. Jon Heyman of MLB.com is reporting that he’ll be back in three weeks. That’s a big loss for the Yankees, and his fantasy baseball owners, but the Yankees have depth in the outfield. They recalled Clint Frazier to fill in.
Miguel Andujar
Speaking of the Yankees, Andujar joins Stanton and eight other Yankees on the IL. Surprisingly, one of them is not Troy Tulowitzki. I jest.
Andujar is dealing with a small labrum tear in his right shoulder. The immediate thought was that he would need season-ending surgery. Andujar is looking for alternate options for obvious reasons. He’s looking at physical therapy and rehab.
Andujar will increase is workouts over the next few weeks and see what his progress is. If you’re in a shallow league, you may want to look for a replacement. Any other league size, he’s a stash until a timetable is confirmed.
As a result, DJ LeMahieu will take over third base, increasing his fantasy value.
Daniel Murphy
The Rockies veteran fractured his finger in Saturday’s game. Manager Bud Black said Murphy will be on the IL for at least a month. I was okay with that report until I read “at least.” That is usually not a good sign. If Murphy progresses well, he shouldn’t be out longer than that, but nothing is for sure.
Ryan McMahon will take over first base. He played there a bit last season. With his move, Garrett Hampson will get more playing time at second base. What was once a platoon has become a dangerous duo on the right side of the infield. Though, Mark Reynolds could play some games at first base as well.
Joey Wendle
Wendle isn’t on the same level as some of the other hitters but he is a fantasy asset. He left Sunday’s game with a left hamstring strain, so a stint on the IL was expected. Hamstrings are tricky. There have been plenty of players returning from a hamstring strain only to go back on the IL days later.
The Rays recalled Christian Arroyo to take his spot on the roster but Brandon Lowe and Daniel Robertson will split time at second base. After the deal Lowe received, he may be on the better side of the platoon.
Hunter Strickland
The sole pitcher on this list, Strickland suffered a Grade 2 lat strain and was placed on the 60-day IL. He recorded two saves against the A’s in the Japan series but was lit up for three runs against the Red Sox.
The Mariners don’t have the deepest bullpen. Roster Resource lists six different pitchers as potential closers. Of those players, the ones fantasy owners should be looking at are Anthony Swarzak and Roenis Elias.
The Mariners should score enough runs to support them with save chances.
It’s been an interesting first week of baseball. The Phillies are the only undefeated team. The Rays and Mariners are atop their respective divisions and Christian Yelich is looking to repeat his MVP season.
As far as the injuries go, don’t make quick decisions and drop these players. Stash them on the IL. It doesn’t hurt your team and you should be able to find a solid replacement in the interim.
