Just a few short weeks after knocking Manchester United out of the FA Cup, Wolves will have a chance to beat United again – in the same building. Wolves shocked a surging United club with a 2-1 upset victory at the Molineux on March 16th.
The game was a tense, scoreless affair for most of the day until Diogo Jota’s goal in the 70th minute. Raul Jiminez scored six minutes later, and Wolves’ lead proved to be insurmountable. Marcus Rashford would give United a faint glimmer of hope with his goal in the 90th minute, but it proved to be far too late in the game to make a meaningful difference.
Since that night, United decided to refrain from playing the guessing game when it comes to their search for a permanent manager. The club elevated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the permanent position after his very successful stint as the interim boss.
After Tottenham’s disastrous loss to league leaders Liverpool on Sunday, United and Spurs are tied on points. A win over Wolves on Tuesday would elevate United to third in the table, something many would have deemed impossible after their lackluster start to this season. After a season that saw them fire one of the most well known and well respected managers in the sport in Jose Mourinho, United are still within striking distance of glory in the Premier League and the Champions League.
Wolves have easily been the most successful of the newly promoted teams this season, as they currently sit at seventh in the league table. Another win against United would put some distance between them and eight place Leicester, as the two clubs are currently tied at 44 points each.
