WWE 205 Live recap for April 2, 2019: Akira Tozawa vs Mike Kanellis
4. Mike Kanellis (with Maria Kanellis) vs Akira Tozawa (with Brian Kendrick)
Commentators Aiden English and Nigel McGuinness argue about the tactics used by Mike and Maria Kanellis to score a victory over Akira Tozawa on 205 Live two weeks prior. Brian Kendrick is at ringside this week in the corner of Tozawa to even the odds and prevent Maria from giving Mike an advantage again.
Mike starts the match off with a headlock and arrogantly looks, at the crowd inciting boos. Tozawa gets control with a couple of kicks and the crowd responds by doing battle-cry shout with him. Both men continue to go back and forth, with Kanellis delivering a huge clothesline to gain control. Maria shouts in celebration and lets the referee know about it.
A trio of suplexes from Mike continues his control as Tozawa kicks out a couple of times to stay alive in the match. Tozawa tries to fight back before Mike ends his comeback with a powerbomb. Mike goes to Maria and she gives him words of encouragement before demanding he get aggressive to secure the win.
An elbow executed from Tozawa to Kanellis gives him some momentum for the first time since early in the match. Tozawa continues to deliver a flurry of moves before ending it with a big kick to Mike’s face. Mike kicks out to continue the back and forth.
Tozawa puts Kanellis in the Iron Octopus submission in an attempt to get a win via tap out, but Kanellis counters. A vicious neckbreaker outside of the ring from Kanellis gives him control. Kanellis, however, decides to hit Kendrick with a cheap shot instead of going for the pin. It allows Tozawa to cut him off on the top rope before hitting a hurricanrana.
Both men exchange fists before taking each other out. The crowd chants “this is awesome” to show appreciation for the efforts of the cruiserweights. Kanellis gets a pin and tries to hold Maria’s hands for leverage. Kendrick returns to alert the official to stop the count. Tozawa reverses Mike’s attempt to get the pin the three count, and the win.
Winner: Akira Tozawa
Mike and Maria are devastated in the ring as Tozawa and Kendrick celebrate their big win on the ramp.
