2. Gleyber Torres may take the leap to superstar

Coming into the season there were a lot of Yankee fans looking for Aaron Judge to become the AL MVP. Curiously, there was significantly less talk about the possibility of Torres taking a big jump in his second season.

He absolutely carried the Yankees offense to a crucial win in Baltimore on Thursday afternoon. Going 4 for 4 with a pair of home runs woke the team’s offense up and got them out of an ugly losing streak. It was Torres, not Judge, who stepped up with this team needed him the most.

It’s unlikely Torres is going to hit .357 all season long, but if he provides more offensive production than he did last season he’s going to be one of the top infielders in baseball. Most MLB executives agree that he’s got a ton of potential, but he may be closer to realizing that potential than a lot of fans believe.

Torres has even looked more confident in the field to start the season. That may be a product of small sample size, but it’s something to monitor moving forward. If he improves both areas of his game it’ll be hard for anyone to say he isn’t one of the game’s true superstars.
