Mike Rotunda

While he would probably go into the WWE Hall of Fame as I.R.S. if he ever were to be inducted, Mike Rotunda had plenty of success before ever adopting the evil accountant gimmick, and it’s many of those early accomplishments (coupled with his success as I.R.S.) that warrants his place in the Hall.

A fun fact about Rotunda: Before Hulk Hogan started using “Real American” as his theme song, the song that’s still associated with a wrestler more than any other in history, who was that song was originally written for? The answer would be The U.S. Express, the team comprised of Barry Windham, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame when The Four Horsemen went in as a group in 2012, and Rotunda.

Paired together in 1984, Windham and Rotunda captured their first WWE tag titles at the expense of Dick Murdoch and Adrian Adonis in early 1985 and actually took part in the very first tag team title match in WrestleMania history, losing the belts to the team of The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff on that historic night. They would regain the titles a few months later but lost them to The Dream Team of Greg Valentine and 2019 WWE Hall of Famer Brutus Beefcake.

Rotunda left WWE in 1987 and found success in the NWA as both a singles and tag team competitor. He was a big part of Kevin Sullivan’s Varsity Club stable and he won the NWA World Television Championship from Nikita Koloff, and later won the NWA World Tag Team Championship with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams by defeating a little team called The Road Warriors.

Oddly enough, it’s not those accomplishments and his normal persona that most people remember. It wasn’t until he debuted as Irwin R. Schyster (I.R.S.), a former tax collector turned wrestler. But the gimmick actually got over, and teaming him with “The Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase to form Money, Inc. was actually quite brilliant.

The duo would go on to win the tag titles on three separate occasions. Another fun fact about Rotunda: The first tag title win for Money Inc. came against The Legion of Doom (The Road Warriors and The Legion of Doom are the exact same team, and widely considered one of the best in history), making Rotunda the only person in wrestling history to ever beat LOD/The Road Warriors for a tag title twice. That’s Hall of Fame-worthy in itself.

Rotunda has also worked in a backstage capacity for WWE and is the father of current WWE superstars Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas.
