SNL once again didn’t hold back in its cold open when it came to roasting the latest thing Trump did.
When it comes to Saturday Night Live, the politically charged cold open has been writing itself since November 2016.
Donald Trump has been a godsend for comedy writers rooms, as not a week goes by where he — or someone close to him — hasn’t done something that feels like an SNL skit come to life.
There’s never a shortage of things to roast Trump and his cronies over, and often times the cold open is a layup. Last week it was an obvious choice to go after the Mueller report, especially given Robert De Niro has shown up more than a handful of times this season as the aforementioned investigator.
As for this week, the path of least resistance was Trump’s comments about how windmills cause cancer. SNL has also taken aim at Fox News and its various loudmouthed personalities. Everyone from Tucker Carlson to Laura Ingraham and Jeanine Pirro has been parodied with great success.
Instead, SNL pivoted to roast liberals this week by having Jason Sudeikis drop by to portray Joe Biden and address his recent sexual harassment scandal. If you missed it, the big topic of the week was allegations against Biden that he is “too touchy feely”, as SNL put it, and they leaned all the way into that.
This opens a few can of worms, not the least of which is that it continues the idea that this is all something we can make light of. This was touched on — no pun intended — with a joke from Cecily Strong about when prompted by Biden saying Trump bragged about actual assault on tape.
“Unlike his voters, yours actually care,” Strong quipped.
