3. New England Patriots

The next team very likely to draft a wide receiver in the 2019 NFL Draft is the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Yes, they won the Super Bowl, but yet again they look like underdogs to start this season. After letting their best pass rusher Trey Flowers walk, having Josh Gordon unavailable again, and losing their starting left tackle and a starting wide receiver (Chris Hogan), the Patriots again look like they might be fading.

Of course, that sentiment never works out, but maybe one day.

In the meantime, though, they definitely still need wide receiver help. Although Belichick has never been one to jump on wide receivers early, we know he was interested in landing Beckham recently, and made a risky move to get a game changer outside when he traded for Gordon. I could see the Patriots finally drafting a wide receiver early this year, with one of their six picks in the first 101 slots!

Three receiver prospects that might fit well with the Patriots include:

  • A.J. Brown: Lauded by some as the best receiver in the class, what Belichick would love about Brown is his physicality (see Julian Edelman) and his intelligence. He understands the game, and sets up cornerbacks to fail. He can play inside or outside as well, and Bill loves that versatility.
  • Stanley Morgan, Jr.: Not as many know about Morgan, because nothing stands out (average height, average speed). But this guy can play, and similar to Brown he is smart and tough. I could see him starting on the outside for Belichick quickly.
  • Jalen Hurd: Belichick is an out-of-the-box thinker, and that mentality might lead him to Hurd, who is still transitioning from running back but has all the physical tools to be elite. He’s also, yet again, tough. And Bill doesn’t mind position changes (see Edelman again).
