Welcome to a special piece from FantasyCPR for this weeks Masters Tournament. What better way to preview the biggest tournament of the year than a brief chat with one of the biggest names in Daily Fantasy Golf, @ThePME the creator of the Pat Mayo Experience himself, Pat Mayo.

Well I didn’t fanboy too hard I don’t think, and I want to start this Daily Fantasy Golf article by saying a big thank you to Pat Mayo for giving me some time this afternoon for a quick chat about the Masters. If you are a regular on PGA Twitter or you do any PGA DFS research for DraftKings, you have certainly come across Mr. Mayo. He is fantastic on camera, very insightful, and if you do not follow him on Twitter you should start there. Follow Pat Mayo on Twitter!

Mostly because I am pretty much a noob in this industry, as I am now approaching a whole year as a writer, I want to say I will deliver this chat we had in the best way I can. I was fortunate enough to get some great answers to some easy questions, so that is what this article will be all about.

Before we get to the Q and A, I want to quickly walk you through all of Pat Mayo’s Masters content available for your research this week. Much like we at FantasyCPR are the leader in first-look content for DFS, Mayo is easily the leader in first-look Masters content. His first available resources were out as early as late March, and it safe to say nobody in the industry works harder, or has a bigger following.

With two full days to absorb some real content before the Masters is underway. I suggest you continue your research here.

The Interview – DraftKings Top Play:

Q: In terms of top-tier plays for the Masters Milly Maker on DraftKings, who ya got?

A: “When you look at the DraftKings board, you obviously have money and the pricing is soft so you do want to pay up for someone. Most will be paying up for Rory McIlroy and even Tiger Woods here, and rightfully so on McIlroy. He is the betting favorite, and is the top price player, but I like Dustin Johnson.

For all of the same reasons, recent form, course history, general skill set they look like the same players. Both have won in the last two months. Both have great Masters history, but we always remember DJ “slipping down the stairs” two years ago forcing him to withdraw.

But the big factor in differentiating between the two is that you have to decide because you can’t have both, and more people will gravitate towards Rory, so you can have basically the same player for less, and at lower ownership.

Now let’s consider another factor. What if the wind shows up like it is supposed to? Dustin Johnson is a much better player in the elements than McIlroy is. Rory is the best player in pristine conditions, but if you crank up the wind-o-meter a little bit, then Dustin Johnson suddenly becomes the best player. On top of that, DJ is probably the second best player in pristine conditions, so you really get the best of both worlds with Johnson.”

The Interview – DraftKings Top Fade:

Q: I am a guy who plays multiple lineups. Is the wind threat enough to fade McIlroy? Who is the guy I should fade in the top-tier if I make a few different lineups this week?

A: “I wouldn’t be in the business of fading Rory, for starters if you are playing multiple lineups, but if you are just playing one then DJ is the guy. So I am not going out of my way to fade McIlroy.

The guy that I am going to be fading, because of the ownership, and because of the fact that he doesn’t necessarily have the skill set that I want ANYMORE. He definitely had it when he last won here in 2005 and that would be Tiger Woods.

He is just super expensive in all formats and he should not be up here in this company. He is over-priced in the DraftKings player pool. He is over-priced in the betting market, and he should be where he belongs, say in the Paul Casey range.

Tiger could be fine here. He does have the experience. But he is just about $1000 over-priced on DK. If you put him up against the top six players in his price range, he just doesn’t stack up statistically anymore. Because it requires being so good off the tee, and the chops just aren’t there for Tiger anymore.

The one part of Tiger’s game that never came back or he is just not able to do anymore is that he is not great with his “Smoke Wagon” as he likes to call it, the driver. He has a better chance of winning the U.S. Open, or the other majors in my opinion, than he does at winning this year at Augusta because this course, at this day and age, against these players, is just not his game anymore.”

The Interview – Betting – First Round Leader Picks:

Q: For of all those with access to betting, in case you are not familiar, Pat Mayo is known as the “First Round Leader Whisperer.” You have been known to nail a FRL bet from time to time, so what makes a first round leader bet a good bet, and who are you looking at for the Masters?

A: “First of all, the first round leader market is one of the best markets in all of sports betting. It is one of the softest ones, because you can exploit it because the big thing is, when you talk about golf, it’s 72 holes and the best players tend to rise to the top, the best skilled players emerge and don’t collapse over the course of four days.

More from DFS

But one particular round, almost any professional golfer can beat another. This is why match play betting is so much fun. Or even just taking underdogs at the Ryder Cup every single time because the Europeans are clearly better, and also underdogs? Let’s take them!

First Round Leader works essentially the same way, except you get wildly juiced numbers. For example, here is one I put out there over the weekend and I wanted it out there before it crashed and the line blew up, so I posted it on Twitter.

Charley Hoffman was sitting at 100-1 before the weekend at the Valero, and after his T-2 finish, he has dropped to 33-1. If you can still find it at 50-1 or better it is still a good bet, but that is unlikely after his solid weekend.

Other guys I am looking at as FRL’s, include Brandt Snedeker at 100-1, Emiliano Grillo at 100-1 and J.B. Homes at 80-1. Those are the guys that I would really be hammering for first round leaders. You want guys who can make birdies, guys who can save their backsides on bogeys, and have enough experience at Augusta and skill-set that they could be day one leaders. These guys can definitely do it, and they are triple digits in odds.”
