WrestleMania 35 results: Becky Lynch takes all, is Raw, SmackDown Women’s Champion
In a night with numerous feel-good finishes, WrestleMania 35 concluded with Becky Lynch being the woman who took all in the historic main event.
It was a long, meandering road that took Becky Lynch from SummerSlam in 2018 to the main event of WrestleMania 35. What should have been a straightforward title match for Ronda Rousey’s Raw Women’s Championship saw it augmented by the addition of Charlotte Flair, the (temporary) subtraction of Lynch via suspension, random stipulations placed on Lynch by the McMahon family, Flair winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship less than two weeks before WrestleMania (leading to the WrestleMania match being a “winner-take-all” affair) and a crazy, police-involved brawl at the Raw go-home show.
But, ultimately, the three top female competitors in the WWE took the ring as WrestleMania 35’s finale — the first time the spot was ever occupied by women — and while they didn’t exactly steal the show (it was after midnight at MetLife Stadium and the event had gone on for nearly eight hours), fans received the payoff they’ve been waiting for for the better part of a year: Lynch is the undisputed Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion.
The match featured serious brutality by all three women, and given the history of the storyline and its ever-increasing violence (and stakes), it seemed believable. Ronda’s leg was brutalized by both Lynch and Flair, Rousey attempted numerous Arm Bar submissions on both of her foes and at one point Lynch broke out a table that proved not to be the difference-maker in the end.
Instead, it was Lynch’s veteran guile while Flair was disposed, that led to her victory. Lynch countered Rousey’s attempt at a Piper’s Pit into a backslide-rollup and was able to get the pin. There was a touch of controversy; it didn’t appear that Rousey’s right shoulder was completely on the mat, but the referee’s decision stood without any outside input, which means the finish might not have looked perfect but was aligned with the overall plan.
This, however, could provide another twist in the saga of the three women; that is, if Rousey isn’t about to take a leave from the company for a short while as has long been rumored. Regardless of the plan for Lynch and her two championships are going forward, there’s no doubt that these three won’t remain linked. And there’s also no doubt that the WWE Universe got the WrestleMania happy ending they’ve been wanting for so long — for Lynch to raise the gold and officially be the top woman in the WWE.
