Taking a look at the five teams most likely to take a quarterback early in the 2019 NFL draft…

In my two previous articles in this series, I dove into the teams most likely to draft a running back and a wide receiver in the 2019 draft, honing in on five teams that appear very likely to draft one of those positions in the early rounds. Here I want to continue with this process and consider the five teams most likely to draft a quarterback in the first or second round.

To get to these teams, I have considered current talent level of the starter, age of the starter, draft capital, contract situation of the starter, and other factors. Of course none of these teams may end up drafting a quarterback early, as we are all guessing. But these are my best guesses!

1. Miami Dolphins

Ryan Tannehill symbolizes perfectly what the Dolphins have gotten out of the quarterback position lately. He wasn’t good enough while on the field, and he was on the field far too seldom. Now they have moved on and have brought in Ryan Fitzpatrick to man the position this year, but he is clearly a stopgap, a placeholder for the quarterback of the future.

They could either draft that quarterback this year, and cut Fitzpatrick after this season with only $1.5m of dead cap. Or they could draft that quarterback of the future next year. So there is a decent chance the Dolphins will tank this year in order to draft a quarterback early next year, but I doubt it. I think they draft a quarterback this year and let him sit behind Fitzpatrick and learn the offense, and take over in 2020.

The prospect I think fits in the best with the Dolphins is Drew Lock. He can sling it, even if he can get a bit wild and loose with the ball, and the Dolphins have been looking for a gunslinger for many years since Dan Marino hung up the cleats. I think there is a decent chance the Broncos take Lock at No. 13.
