When the draw for the Champions League round of 16 took place in December, it was widely stated that Paris Saint-Germain had pretty much been handed a free pass by meeting Manchester United. A lot changed between then and the games themselves, of course, with Jose Mourinho finally being put out of his considerable misery. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival saw United’s players no longer looking lost or unhappy, and results subsequently improved.
Unfortunately for United fans, though, quite a lot has changed since that improbable victory over PSG as well. Although said supporters hated to hear it, the team’s underlying numbers following Solskjaer’s appointment had never been as good as the results suggested. And the widely predicted downturn in the team’s fortunes has indeed come to pass, with United losing three of the past four games in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Barcelona’s win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday won’t have been celebrated in the red half of Manchester, as it all but assured Barca of another La Liga title. Given that the league game they play between these two Champions League ties is against bottom-of-the-table Huesca, the Catalan giants should be able to rest key players. United, in contrast, are currently in last position in the four-way race to secure the Premier League’s two remaining Champions League places.
