Who will be named fighter of the decade for the 2010s?
Canelo Alvarez
Record in decade: 21-1-1, 13 KOs (will fight Daniel Jacobs on May 4)
Canelo Alvarez is the face of boxing, the biggest star in the sport and among the best fighters in the world. He has always fought the best, and is continuing to do so.
There isn’t much to say about Alvarez: He is the man at the moment. Despite being No. 3 on our pound-for-pound list, he has the best resume of any fighter listed.
His lone loss is to one of the best boxers ever, Floyd Mayweather, in a fight that Alvarez was frankly not ready for. He had just turned 23 years old and did not have enough rounds against elite fighters to take on the best in the sport.
Regardless, a loss does not hurt a fighter, especially when it is to one of the best to ever do it, and Alvarez is evidence of that. He learned from it, and went on to become the face of boxing, and fight virtually everybody he could.
His most notable wins are over Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto and Gennady Golovkin. He also has wins over Shane Mosley (albeit an old Mosley), Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo. Oh, and he is facing Daniel Jacobs in May, with the expectation that if he emerges victorious, he will face Golovkin for a third time in September. The dude fights everyone.
If Alvarez does defeat Jacobs in May (as he is favored to do), and then faces GGG in September (which is the plan), he will have faced Golovkin three times and Daniel Jacobs in a span of 24 months. What a run that would be.
Even if you dislike the guy, you have to respect him. He is what boxing is all about, fighting the best. If only more fighters followed suit.
