Fantasy Baseball 2019 Week 3 Waiver Wire Additions
By Bill Pivetz
Here are my fantasy baseball week 3 waiver wire pickups.
With Week 3 of the fantasy baseball season almost here, it’s important for you to get a jump start on the next wave of waiver wire additions. Whether it’s due to injury or poor performance, owners can afford to make an upgrade or two to their team.
Regardless of your league’s settings, these players have proved over the last week that they deserve to be owned in more leagues. The players listed here can provide contact, power, strikeouts and saves. All valuable stats for fantasy baseball.
In this piece, I have three hitters and four pitchers listed as potential additions this week. All players listed are owned in less than 30 percent of ESPN leagues.
Freddy Galvis
Galvis has been on a roll over the last week. He’s on a seven-game hitting streak with three multi-hit games in the mix. Galvis has a .375 average with three home runs and nine RBI on the season.

Galvis started the season hitting at the bottom of the Blue Jays lineup but over the last five games, he’s been hitting either first or second. Those extra at-bats will add up to more hits and scoring opportunities.
The Blue Jays shortstop is available in 85 percent of ESPN leagues.
Mitch Moreland
Moreland is off to a hot start this season. He’s hitting .295 with five home runs and 12 RBIs. He hit a home run in three consecutive games.
Moreland is hitting in the middle of the Red Sox lineup, between Mookie Betts and JD Martinez. That is a perfect spot for him to drive in runs. I’d rather pitch to Moreland than those other two.
His playing time may diminish at some point if Martinez goes back to being the DH. Until then, though, he’s a must-add as a part of one of the best lineups in the league.
Kevin Pillar
Pillar is hitting better since joining the Giants. Though, it’s hard to do worse than a .068 average. The 18-inning game the Giants and Rockies just played didn’t help. He’s on a five-game hitting streak with 10 RBIs in that span.
Pillar also has three home runs in his last five games. Hitting in Oracle Park may not lead to much power but it is spacious enough to rack up some extra base hits.
Unlike Galvis, Pillar is slotted either seventh or eighth in the Giants lineup. San Francisco doesn’t have many other options so Pillar will continue to get playing time.
Merrill Kelly
Kelly has had two good starts to begin this season. He met the minimum requirements for a quality start against the Padres and then pitched eight innings of one-run ball against the Red Sox.
Kelly makes his next start on April 13 against the Padres again, this time at home. The humidor is still holding up as Chase Field ranks 28th in home runs according to ESPN Park Factors.
If he has another good start, he’ll have to be owned in more than 22 percent of leagues.
All Mariners Relievers
Anthony Swarzak, Roenis Elias, and Cory Gearrin need to be owned. The Mariners already have 13 wins. Their offense is crushing the ball with a home run in every game this season.
The bullpen has also been an important part to their early success. They have 22 combined saves plus holds, the most in the league. Six relievers have at least one save. Even if you don’t use holds, manager Scott Servais has not committed to one guy in the ninth inning.
Swarzak is the most popular candidate but Elias is also worth a look. Though, because of the mix-and-match styles, their usage is will be limited compared to other relievers.
These players are proving their worth for fantasy owners. If you need to cut someone, know there are valuable players waiting for you.
